San Miguel de Allende is one of the oldest cities in the central highlands of the Mexican Republic, founded in 1542 by Franciscan missioner Juan de San Miguel. In 1826 it was renamed after one of the heroes of the war of independence, Ignacio Allende, having itself played an important role in the insurgency.

In 1926 San Miguel de Allende was declared a national historic monument in order to preserve the colonial character of the city, and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.

San Miguel de Allende continues to inspire and fascinate its visitors and inhabitants. Famous for its mild climate, thermal springs and colonial-era architecture, San Miguel de Allende has attracted and continues to attract a large community of foreign residents.
In March 1999 the readers of Travel and Leisure chose San Miguel de Allende as the sixth favorite city in the whole world. Fortune magazine proclaimed San Miguel as one of the twenty most attractive cities to enjoy the retirement.

The town is a great place to relax and enjoy a slower pace of life in a beautiful colonial environment. There are plenty of arts and crafts shops, galleries, good restaurants and cafés to pass the time in.
