Uruapan is one of the most important cities in Michoacán. Its economy is based on agriculture and fruticulture, and is one of the main producers of avocado in Mexico.

Fray Juan de San Miguel founded this prosperous city in 1533, inviting the Puhrepechan indians cultivate the land, and organizing them into small barrios. These were considered autonomous communities with their own identity and traditions. The inhabitants were encouraged to learn certain trades, incuding the manufacture of hand crafts for which the region has become famous.
Uruapan is a paradise for lovers of hiking and nature. Eduardo Ruiz National Park is one of the most beautiful places to visit in the country. Famous for its waterfalls, it was named after the Mexican politician and historian who wrote affectionately about the landscapes, traditions and legends of Michoacán.

The National Park is the source of the Cupatitzio River ("The river that sings") which courses through the city and out toward the waterfalls "La Tzaráracua" and "La Tzararacuita" on the southern outskirts of the city.
