History of Los Azufres
Los Azufres is situated in the mountainous, North Eastern side of Michoacan near Ciudad Hidalgo. It is an area of spectacular natural beauty, with dense pine forests and abundant wildlife.
It is famous for its geothermal activity, which is converted to electricity at CFE's state of the art power station, and there are several bathing resorts where you can soak in the hot, mineral rich waters.
There is also a notable trout farming industry in Los Azufres, and you should certainly stop for a delicious, and inexpensive meal at one of the many restaurants serving this local delicacy.
Things to do
Eréndira's Cabins and Bathing Resort is without doubt one of the nicest and most popular destinations in Los Azufres. Their beautiful landscaped gardens offer seven swimming pools, with water temperatures between 30 and 40°C (86 and 104°F). There are cabins to rent, with large comfortable beds, DVD players, and wood-burning stoves. You can also camp there inexpensively with full use of their showers and facilities.
There are also other sites of interest at Laguna Larga and Laguna Verde, including hot springs, mud volcanos, and geysers. It's a great place for hiking and being close to nature.
